Horus Defeated

Played a game of the Horus Heresy board game from Fantasy Flight with my girlfriend tonight. She's not a 40k player and also hadn't played this before, but occasionally humours me by pretending to be interested in the 40k universe. Which is quite sweet of her really.

Sadly she must have learned a thing or two from listening to me, because she managed to halt the advance of Horus and his forces of Chaos for long enough for reinforcements to arrive.
It's a good game, though I don't often get a chance to play it so remain pretty rusty on the rules. Like other Fantasy Flight games I've played the rules can be a bit convoluted and not always presented in the most understandable manner. This meant a fair bit of flicking back and forward in the rulebook, and even a couple of mid-game revelations. And like other Fantasy Flight games it's a great piece of kit, lots of little plastic models, thick card tokens, "gazillions" of cards (as described by Jenny) and a great board to play on.

All in all it's a game I really like, and will hopefully get more chances to play soon!

The mass of Necron defenders

A long line of Warriors

The attackers arrive

Assault phase, move ALL the models!

Stalker wants to join in too

You brought us dinner?

Played a game with the new flyer scenario from White Dwarf on Thursday, tweaked slightly as not many of us have picked up any flyers yet.

Grey Knights brought 3 Storm Ravens, Necrons had 2 Doom Scythes, and also counted our 2 Doomsday Arks and Monolith as targets for destruction.

It was 5000pts each side with Grey Knights attacking Necrons. We only managed to get through 3 turns before running out of time, with the Necrons managing to defend enough of our flyers to take the win.

Grey Knights came on swinging hard, but because of the reserve rules they rarely came on in large enough numbers to threaten the robotic hordes.

Afraid these photos came out pretty badly, but wanted to post them anyway just for the size of the game.

Last night was a Necron vs Space Marine mega-battle, 7500pts per side. Rather than wall-of-text I’ll just give you some highlights

  • Over 150 Necron Warriors takes up a lot of space

  • 4 Land Raiders look cool parked up next to each other

  • 2 C’tan working together munch through most things

  • Deep striking Monoliths isn’t as good an idea as it used to be

  • Orikan + C’tan with Writhing Worldscape in a game this size is brutal

  • Imotekh also rocks in big games

  • Even on 6’s to hit a big squad of scarabs will munch through armour

Space Marines managed to hold the objective (the club’s new Fortress of Redemption model) when the game ended after turn 3, but we were making them really struggle for it, and wiped out most of the units inside it. Sadly we ran out of time, as things were about to get messy as the main force of Necrons closed on the Fortress, while the Space Marines pulled in reinforcements to plug the gaps in the line.

Good times!
