It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything, most of my photos have just been going straight to Twitter (@RedAkhrin) without any edits.

I played Storm of Magic tonight, 2400 points (plus 600 of pacts and items) each. My Dark Elves took on High Elves who had brought Vampire Counts allies. Deployment saw me boxing up on my right flank where I had both of my Arcane Fulcrums. My opponent had his Fulcrums in opposite corners, so his deployment stretched in a line between them.

Since I’d kept my forces grouped up I was able to focus on parts of the enemy army as they got close, meaning I made short work of his left flank and was in a good position as the rest neared me. All of my success in clearing hostile Fulcrums came from shooting. My Boltthrower utterly flopped, failing to do anything all game, but the Dark Riders made up for it doing the majority of wounds against Fulcrums while my Shades and Crossbowmen helped finish them off.

Teclis was, as always, a major pain in the ass firing down countless fireballs onto my units and even obliterating one of my Sorceresses on a Fulcrum in turn one! However a solid volley of crossbow fire around turn 3 did the trick against him, the master of magic being torn apart by mundane crossbow bolts.

In the end I held 2 Arcane Fulcrums to my opponent’s 0, as well as having solid control of the battlefield resulting in a clean victory for the Druchii over the crown-stealing High Elves.

Here’s some shots from a Dark Elf vs High Elf mega-battle we fought at the club last night. Each side had 6000 points, that’s an intense 12,000 points of elves on the battlefield!

After a few turns of manoeuvring - about standard for any game of Fantasy - the two armies started to reach combat. The 90-spearman block of Dark Elves in the centre held, while the Witch Elves and Cold One Knights broke through one flank, despite heavy losses on the Wyches. When the dust settled the High Elf flank had collapsed and the Dark Elves were pushing deeply through their lines, a victory for Nagarythe!

A few days later than I’d planned to post this, partly down to me experimenting with various ways of posting images.

These are from a 3-player Warhammer Fantasy campaign game some of the guys were playing at the club on Thursday. 2400pts each of High Elves, Vampire Counts and Skaven.

It was a good turnout at the club last night, with 4 tables on the go. I had to head off for my train before they were over, but got some in-progress photos.

First we’ve got Eldar and Dark Eldar taking on Chaos and Dark Eldar. Oh, those treacherous Dark Eldar. It looked like things were going pretty well for the Eldar, I don’t think the game was far from over when I left as waves of skimmers rushed over the battlefield working divide and conquer against Chaos.

Secondly there’s Necron and Guard taking on a team of Orks and Space Marines. Didn’t get much of a look the, but things seemed to be going well for the Necrons and Guard who had brought 3 Doom Scythes and a few Leman Russ!

Last up we’ve got Fantasy! One of our Fantasy veterans, playing High Elves, was doing an intro game against Skaven. Fantasy games always look fantastic, I’d struggle to say who was looking best off there as I only got a quick look but after a brief chat it sounded like they were both enjoying it.

High Elves deployed for war

Archers fire on the advancing Undead

Loads of Elves!

Terrorgheist perches on the tower

Undead advance

Blood Knight cavalry

Undead prepare to strike the Elf line

Elves hold the tower against Undead

While we were playing our 40k game a couple of the guys at the club had a 6000pt per side game of Warhammer Fantasy. High Elves took on Vampire Counts, and it was quite a sight to see! I didn’t get much chance to watch what was going on, but by the end the Vampire Counts had been effectively wiped out by the Elves. Messy stuff! From the sounds of things the High Elves pretty much shut down the Vampire magic phase.

Dangerous war hamsters

I was in Games Workshop over the weekend picking up some paints/supplies, and was subject to the usual sales pitch about the latest awesome whatever that I absolutely have to buy. This was, of course, Warhammer Fantasy Battles which is about to move on to the new version.

Now I haven't played WHFB in about 10 years, but I have to admit I'm quite tempted. There are all sorts of reasons that I'm not going to, of course; I can't afford the time or money and already have two 40k armies in desperate need of painting. But a quick play-test with a couple of units in the store impressed me with how much quicker and more flowing the game now seems to be.

So what might end up happening is once I've got my Eldar painted up and ready to roll I might think about a small WHFB force just to scratch the fantasy itch that I seem to have picked up (yes, I just compared Warhammer to an irritating rash). Top of the ideas list at the moment is High Elves, simply for the sake of all those spears. I do like spears. But then Elves are somewhat poncy, and it might be a bit close to my Eldar for my liking. If not that, then what? I used to play Bretonnians, and they are quite a cool-looking force. I do medieval reencatment, so the idea of a mass of peasants, men-at-arms and knights does have a strong appeal.

But what all this thinking about Fantasy has made me realised is that I can remember so little of the lore surrounding it. So I may spend some time browsing places like Lexicanum getting myself read up on the back story so I can make an informed decision.
